The Fullback positionis a bit of a "dying breed". He lines up in the backfield, either in front of the Running Back in the "I" formation, alongside another Running Back in the "T" formation, or next to the Quarterback in the shotgun or spread formation. This position has the following responsibilities: 1) Block on running plays, leading the RB into the holeand occasionally carrying the ball. 2) Carry out running fakes. Block, and serve as an outlet receiver on pass plays. NFL teams tend to be gravitating toward multi-TE formations, with one TE functioning as either an H-back or an F-back. Positional characteristics inclued: A. Fullbacks are normally powerfully built with ability to maintain a low center of gravity for blocking on running plays, as well as pass protections. B. An ability to catch the ball on outlet passes and the intestinal fortitude to pick up tough yards when given the opportunity on running plays |
