OFFENSIVE GUARDS

Drafttek Live Positional Rankings

The Guards are the offensive linemen on either side (right or left) of the Center. Their responsibilities include:

1) Engage the Defensive Tackle in straight-ahead run and pass blocking, protecting the middle of the line.
2) Perform other blocking techniques, such as pulling for sweeps, cross-blocking, trapping, double-teaming, etc.

One Guard prospect may be preferred over another based upon the following factors:

A. Prevailing offensive philosophy. A zone blocking scheme would favor speed and agility over size.
B. Opponent's defensive philosophy. If a majority of the team's opponents play a 3-4 defense, the guard may assist the center in engaging the nose tackle. If opponents are majority 4-3, the Guard may be required to engage the Defensive Tackle directly.
