CORNERBACKS

Drafttek Live Positional Rankings

Cornerbacks defend the wide receivers and protect the "corner" of the offensive alignment, not letting plays get outside of them. Their responsibilities include:

1) Defend the wide receivers on pass plays with deep, and outside responsibilities
2) Defend end sweeps (running plays) by turning the play inside for the linebackers

This diagram shows CB's in a 4-3 alignment (which is the same as CB's in a 3-4). One CB prospect may be selected over another based on the following factors:

A. Prevailing defensive philosophy: Some defenses play press coverage with more man-to-man responsibilities while others play a two-deep zonewith the CB's playing soft, keeping the play in front of them. Based on the alignment, a CB may have safety help over the top or have to cover the receiver all over the field.
B. Opponent's offensive philosophy: the West Coast Offense has short drops, quick reads and passes for a "run after catch" mentality. On the other hand, a running attack with play action passing emphasizes longer patterns. The size of WR's within the division (small/quick vs big/fast) may dictate the sizeof CB that a team drafts.

All picks, 1 page! Drafttek prepared an internal-use spreadsheet for its analysts, who were tired of sifting through page after page to find historical draft picks. They said "put it online for our readers!" This resource allows fans to find all drafted players from the 2010-2013 drafts - side by side all on the same page.
